While it's bounced back a little in recent trading days, the stock market is still off all-time highs. Moreover, some great stocks that sold off have remained down. This is despite their high-quality businesses that should generate profits that reward investors for many years to come. Instead of lamenting their lack of bouncing back, investors shouldn't miss out on the chance to buy. In this article, three Motley Fool contributors each bring one of their favorite bargain stocks worth buying, including a special-situation opportunity with Albertsons Companies (NYSE: ACI) , streaming leader Roku (NASDAQ: ROKU) , and beaten-up bank stock Live Oak Bancshares (NYSE: LOB) . This video streamer is down, but far from out Eric Volkman (Roku): A perceived battle against a big retailer has considerably dampened sentiment on Roku, a maker of video streaming devices and a platform operator. The company's shares fell off a cliff in mid-February and have basically stayed in

St. Paul farmers market returns for 170th year - CBS News

Image
ST. PAUL, MINN. — For some, it's the unofficial sign the seasons have turned. Minnesota's farmers markets are beginning to make their return. The St. Paul Farmer's Market opened for the season on Saturday morning, marking its 170th year. "We were here I think one year before the state was the state – so that's pretty good," joked market manager Jim Golden. "For us, this really is the kickoff for the summer. It's kick off for the spring, it's kick off where everything starts from here." Golden, who is entering his 40th year with the market, describes the group like a family – making Saturday's return a reunion of sorts. "It goes back generations," he said. "The kids grow up working here, they get older, start family farms, they start having kids." The case is such for flower man Justin Nelson, whose family owns and operates Nelson Greenhouse and Veggies in Big Lake. "I've been coming here since I was a l

New-Look Brewers Keep Winning Despite Playing In MLB's Smallest Market - Forbes

Image
This was the year that the Milwaukee Brewers were supposed to drop back to the pack following six years of being a small-market success story. Manager Craig Counsell left after nine seasons to sign a five-year, $40-million contract with the NL Central rival Chicago Cubs. Ace pitcher Corbin Burnes and his $15.6-million salary were traded to the Baltimore Orioles. Yet the Brewers are in first place in the National League Central with a 16-8 record, putting them a half-game ahead of the Cubs. It seems Milwaukee hasn’t missed a beat following the promotion of bench coach Pat Murphy to manager and weathering having nine players on the injured list, including 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich. These new-look Brewers are looking like a team that can defend its division title and reach the postseason for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Murphy, though, isn’t taking time to reflect on the first two dozen games of his managerial career. Instead, he is concentrating on his young tea

Will Higher Rates Spell Doom For the Stock Market? - A Wealth of Common Sense

Image
A reader asks: I don’t work in finance but I know enough math to get me into trouble (I’m an engineer). All else equal, a higher discount rate should mean a lower present value of future cash flows. I know all is not always equal but with rates rising again and the prospect of higher for longer now firmly on the table, shouldn’t that be a headwind for stocks? What am I missing here? Good question. Finance theory does state that the present value of an asset is the future stream of cash flows discounted by a reasonable rate of interest. If PV = CFs / (1+rate) time and the rate goes up, all else equal, the present value should go down. The problem with this line of thinking is there is a huge difference between theory and reality. Plus, all is rarely ever equal. After rising at a fast clip last fall, interest rates dipped but they are now going back up again: The spread between the short and long ends of the curve is compressing. This should be bad for the stock market, right?

Stock market today: US stocks tumble after Meta's reality check, soft GDP print - Yahoo Finance

Image
Stocks fell on Thursday after a sharply lower-than-expected reading on US GDP for the first quarter ratcheted up questions about the health of the US economy in the face of persistently high interest rates. Tech stocks led the way down as Meta's ( META ) revenue forecast rattled investors eyeing the next high-stakes megacap earnings. The Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC ) fell roughly 1.3%. The S&P 500 ( ^GSPC ) lost 0.9%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( ^DJI ) slipped 1.3%, or over 400 points. US GDP growth came in at a 1.6% annualized pace in the first quarter, falling well short of expectations of 2.5%. The reading comes amid ongoing debate about the path of the Federal Reserve's interest rate campaign. Treasury yields rose after the GDP print, with the benchmark 10-year yield ( ^TNX ) surging to its highest levels of the year. At last check, it was sitting around 4.73%. Meanwhile, Meta shares sank as much as 15% as the market balked at rising costs at the Facebo
