Farmers market in Fresno’s Tower District on hiatus. Why some hope it stays that way - Fresno Bee

Fresno City Councilmember Annalisa Perea, right, announces the new Tower District Farmers Market to be held weekly starting April 20 on Olive Avenue during a press conference Wednesday, April 19, 2023 in Fresno. ERIC PAUL ZAMORA ezamora@fresnobee.com When the Tower District Farmer’s Market opened in April , Shannon Houston was excited at the prospect of getting a weekly neighborhood hangout and access to the region’s abundance of fruits and vegetables. She was confused on its opening night, to find a closed-down Olive Avenue that was loud and reeking of generator fumes. Walking through a gauntlet of food trucks she found just three or four vegetable stands nestled in the middle of the market. “I walked away with my bag of veggies, kind of shocked by it all,” says Houston, one of a group of community members raising concerns about the weekly market, which recently announced it’s closed for the winter. Originally launched as a 52-week, year-round event, the market closed

Stock Market Today: Dow Wavers Ahead of Fed Decision; Tesla, Microsoft, Boeing, and More Movers; Crypto News - Barron's

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell below a key milestone on Wednesday. News from the Treasury Department, regional bank earnings, as well as economic data this morning have investors bidding for the safe-haven asset. The 10-year yield traded as low as 3.9435% on Wednesday, the lowest intraday value since Jan. 12. Traders have been looking for yields to break below 4% after the recent run-up above that level. Yields move inversely to prices. The decline came after New York Community Bancorp swung to a quarterly loss and cut its dividend as the smaller lender looks to build up capital to adjust to the requirements of being a larger bank. New York Community Bancorp stock plunged 34%. The pain spread to other smaller lending institutions. Zions Bancorporation stock was down 3.4%, while M&T Bank Corporation declined 2.3%. Investors run for Treasuries when they sense trouble on the horizon, and the selloff in bank stocks may be offering memories of last spring’s ba

Czech's Economic Council wants regulated cannabis market - Marijuana Business Daily

Image
The Czech Republic’s National Economic Council, known as NERV, is recommending that the government establish a regulated cannabis market to help spur economic growth. The NERV is an independent advisory body that makes recommendations regarding economic reforms. ADVERTISEMENT The cannabis regulation measure was one of 37 recommendations the business body made to boost economic growth in the country. “Criminal rates and sentencing principles should be adjusted. In the area of drug policy, a legal regulated cannabis market should be introduced,” the NERV noted in its recommendation. In January, experts were expecting the government to unveil a draft cannabis law that included a regulated cannabis market. Instead, the website expats.cz – which says it provides content on navigating life as a foreigner in the Czech Republic – reported that the government had presented a draft of its cannabis bill which did not include the previously envisioned regulated market. The plan rep

Bitcoin Pumps as Market Awaits Fed Rate Verdict - Decrypt

Image
Bitcoin and most other big coins and tokens have jumped at the start of what will be an important week for the crypto and equities markets.  BTC , the biggest digital asset by market cap, is now trading for over $43,000 per coin, according to CoinGecko. It has risen 3% in 24 hours and 7% over the past week.  Last week, it dropped—albeit briefly—below $39,000. Market observers have been torn on what, exactly, the asset will do now that several spot BTC exchange-traded funds (ETF) have been approved. So far, it has struggled to make gains.  But this week could be even more key as the U.S. central bank decides what to do about interest rates.  In 2022, the Fed started aggressively raising rates in a bid to try and control 40-year high inflation. Initially, the hikes negatively impacted the value of stocks and crypto. Both digital assets like BTC and U.S. equities—particularly tech stocks on the Nasdaq—are “risk assets”, meaning their prices are more volatile than other investments.

Stock market today: Stocks mixed as Intel outlook chills techs - Yahoo Finance

Stocks bounced back Friday afternoon following looking past a gloomy outlook from Intel and embracing a key inflation reading seen as influential in the timing of an interest rate cut. The S&P 500 ( ^GSPC ) rose 0.2% after a winning Thursday saw the benchmark close at another record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ( ^DJI ) increased 0.3% or about 130 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC ) edged up 0.1% Techs lagged behind the other indexes after Intel's ( INTC ) first quarter outlook fell well short of Wall Street expectations, somewhat denting the AI-fueled hopes that have helped lift stocks to record highs . Intel shares 10% during afternoon trading, with peers AMD ( AMD ) and Nvidia ( NVDA ) also taking a slight knock. The release of the PCE index for December painted a rosy inflation picture for investors, however. "Core" PCE, the inflation gauge commonly known as the Fed's preferred measure, fell below 3% on an annual basis, the s

Services activity in the middle of the U.S. in January improved from December but stayed in negative territory, while expectations for future activity rose modestly, according to a monthly survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The Tenth District Services Survey's composite index, a weighted average of indexes covering revenue/sales, employment and inventory, came in at minus 2 in January, up from a reading of minus 7 in December but down from zero in November. Readings above zero indicate expansion, while those below zero indicate contraction. The Kansas City Fed said activity among industries was mixed in January, with the retail and transportation seeing substantial declines, and professional and health services posting gains. The bank said its index of expectations for future services activity was 3 in January, up from minus 1 in December, as firms surveyed expect mild increases in revenue and employment in the next six months. A crippled housing market has left Americans stranded in 40-year-old properties and unable to afford most home improvements. Now they are turning to ‘home hardening’ instead - Fortune

Image
A home should be a sanctuary, a safe place to feel sheltered against the chaos and threats of the outside world. But with the recent onslaught of  record-breaking natural disasters , many Americans are feeling increasingly vulnerable. In the past year alone, we’ve endured the hottest summer on record, devastating wildfires in Canada and Hawaii, flooding in Vermont and New York City, and hurricanes in both Los Angeles and Maine. The situation is especially problematic considering American homes aren’t getting any younger. In fact,  38% of homes  in the U.S. were built before 1970–and the median age of homes in America is  40 years . With aging roofs, insufficient drainage, and outdated systems, many homes are in desperate need of upgrades to improve their resiliency. Unfortunately, affordability is a challenge for many Americans, especially when it comes to major renovations. Supplies and labor are prohibitively expensive, and interest rates on home equity lines of credit–the typica

Palm Springs Home Market Choked by Airbnb Rules - The Real Deal

Image
Investors who once saw shimmering profits in Palm Springs Airbnb rentals have hit an impasse. A cap on short-term rentals in the Coachella Valley hub has all but frozen the housing market in high-demand neighborhoods, the Los Angeles Times reported. Homes sit unsold for months and investors who gobbled up Palm Springs properties during the pandemic now face hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses. When the Airbnb platform launched in 2008, it transformed the rental market by making it easier for homeowners to rent out houses and rooms. But then cities started to notice how much housing was lost to short-term rentals.  Critics said Airbnbs strip affordable housing from the market, while neighbors complained of waves of tourists and loud, late-night parties , in addition to disputes between hosts and renters. As a result, some cities put the kibosh on short-term rentals, according to the Times. New York allows such rentals only if the host remains present for the entire stay.
